So, you built a blog, but you’re only getting a handful of visitors each day. Now you’re wondering how to monetize a blog with low traffic. Or maybe you’re thinking it’s time to quit.
What if I told you that you could make a good living from your blog right now? That’s right — you don’t need thousands of weekly blog visitors to earn an income.
At the time of writing, my blog gets a few thousand visitors a month. Not so long ago I was only attracting a handful of new readers each week. Yet, I’m earning a comfortable four-figure income online. You can do the same.
How To Monetize A Blog (When You Have Low Traffic)
The secret is knowing how to monetize a blog at different stages of a blog’s life. Sure, there’s nothing wrong with the usual methods:
- Adding Google AdSense ads to your pages
- Placing CPA banners on your site
- Writing sponsored articles
- Inserting affiliate links in your content
- Selling ad space directly to advertisers
- Slapping up a “PayPal donate” button and hoping for the best
These strategies can work. But here’s the problem…
… they require a LOT of traffic to pay off. Let’s take Google AdSense, for example.
You earn a few cents every time someone clicks on a link. With only a few hundred – or even a few thousand – visitors per month, you’re not going to get many clicks, and barely enough money to cover your coffee habit.
Then there’s selling ad space. Great idea, but the amount of money you can charge for ad space is directly related to your number of pageviews.
For small traffic blogs, there’s a better way to monetize your blog. Actually, there are three:
- Sell your time
- Sell your brain
- Sell your own physical products
Let’s explore each of these in more detail.
1. Sell Your Time
The life coaching industry is now worth around $2 billion per year. And life coaching isn’t your only option. There are coaching and consulting opportunities in almost any industry or topic.
If you blog about personal finance, you can help people create a budget to get out of debt. If you’re a health blogger, you can create personalized health plans for your followers. When I wrote about online business, I offered paid website reviews.
If you’re an expert in your subject (which you probably are, if you’re blogging about it) then selling a service is the fastest way to earn your first $1000.
You only need a handful of clients to start earning a monthly four-figure income.
2. Sell Your Brain
As an affiliate, you may earn up to 50% of each course or product you sell. But if you create your own digital product then you earn 100%.
Why would anyone buy an information product from you, when you share so much free advice on your blog?
Because your product is a more structured learning environment. It provides a focused place to learn a skill or solve a problem. That is what I do in my Author Success Blueprint course. I go deeper than I can in any of my articles.
And, if you offer an online course, you provide a supportive learning environment, where you interact with your students to help them achieve results. Your followers want access to YOU.
Lastly, creating a digital product is a powerful positioning tool. It allows you to demonstrate your knowledge and brand yourself as an expert. Your students become an active audience who are engaged in your message. They are more likely to buy from you again and again.
You don’t need to wait until you have thousands of website visitors before creating and selling your first information product. With an email list of a few hundred subscribers, you could sell several copies of an online course, eBook or other digital product.
3. Sell Your Own Physical Products
This last option is a little more complex but don’t dismiss it out of turn. Because it’s more difficult to do, there’s a lot less competition.
By selling your own products through Amazon, an Etsy store or other online marketplace, you can add a new revenue stream to your blog.
You don’t need to create a complicated product. Some Etsy sellers are pocketing a thousand dollars per month selling T-shirts or downloadable planners.
I sell paperback books on Amazon. I don’t need a massive audience because Amazon already has a huge user base. When I published my first book I had no blog and only a few hundred email subscribers. In this article, I shared how I earned $9000 in passive income from my books.
What physical product will appeal to your audience? Where do your ideal readers shop online? Is there a way you can capture that audience by offering them a physical product?
You can also sell a product direct from your blog. But with low traffic, you’ll have fewer sales. I prefer to leverage someone else’s audience and bring those people back to my site after they have purchased one of my books.
Ready To Start Earning From Your Low Traffic Blog?
I’ve shown you how to monetize a blog with low traffic using three proven strategies.
Does this mean you can’t also sell advertising space or place affiliate links in your content? Of course not!
You can incorporate any number of monetization methods into your blog.
I recommend testing multiple revenue streams before settling on a few that work for you. This diversifies your income. When one source suffers, you have other income streams to fall back on.
Also, not all monetization strategies will work for everyone. In a previous post I discussed my three biggest side income failures. Each one of these “failures” taught me something valuable. I learned what I’m good at… and what I have absolutely no talent for.
The key is to discover the best monetization strategies for you and your audience.
If you’re not sure where to start, take an inventory of your strengths. Are you good at connecting with people? In which case, think about providing a service. Or do you prefer to create things? If this is you, then you could offer a digital or physical product.
And don’t be afraid to experiment. You don’t need to wait to start earning from your blog. Implement one of these monetization methods and help your audience more deeply. Then, watch your income grow.
