It took me over a year to learn how to make 10K from home. Then it took me another five years to create the business I have today.
And I know I’m not alone in my struggles. I’ve taught hundreds of students and over 28,000 readers the exact steps to make money from home.
These steps work. No matter whether you want to be an author, blogger, coach, or freelancer.
They are the same process I’ve used to make more than $100,000 from home. Many of my students have also made 10K – and much more – following these steps.
Yet, for every person who succeeds there’s someone else who fails to make even one dollar from home. Why is this?
What My Journey Looked Like
Before I answer this question, I’d like to show you how I went from earning zero to making more than $100,000 from home.
I share my journey so that you know you’re not alone. In fact, most people who are succeeding online took a lot longer than you might think to get to where they are today.
If you’re like me and have already struggled for a year, two years, or even longer. Then please don’t give up.
Later in this post, I walk you through the exact process to make $1000, then $10,000, in a much shorter timeframe than it took me.
But first, here’s my timeline…
2012: Left corporate to stay home with my one-year old.
2013: Launched my first business, a local kids’ consignment sale
2014: Closed my business, after netting zero dollars (though I did have a lot of fun!)
2014 – 2017: Experimented with various side business ideas, earned some good money, but lacked focus
2018: Started concentrating on self-publishing and growing my author income
2019: Expanded my business to incorporate more coaching and launched Home Business School
When I look at my timeline, I realize I spent almost four years without having any focus. I would have found success much faster if I’d committed to one thing earlier in my journey.
Now, if your work-at-home history looks something like mine. Please don’t beat yourself up.
I truly believe there’s no such thing as failure. I learned so much on my journey – about online business, having a success mindset, and doing the kind of work you’re meant to do.
I believe there’s a reason why it took me time to find my place in the world. My experience has given me unique insight into how to help others navigate their own work-from-home journey.
So now let’s return to the original question. Why do most people fail to make money from home?
Why Most People Fail
I’ve already hinted at the answer. Most of us fail because we lack focus and commitment.
Once I picked a direction and stuck with it, everything began to change.
Yet, it isn’t surprising that most of us lack focus. With so many options available, it’s easy to jump from one thing to the next. It’s a lot harder to have the self-discipline to stick with one thing.
But here’s what happens when you do commit…
You show up consistently for yourself and for your audience. You develop an expertise and have more to offer. Your efforts start to compound. Your small successes grow into bigger breakthroughs.
Now, this doesn’t mean it will be a straight-line process. Finding your purpose and making a consistent income is rarely that straight forward.
However, there is a system you can follow that will save you from wasting time like I did.
How To Make 10K (Without Wasting Years Getting There)
Hopefully, you buy into the idea of committing to one path. But you may still be wondering how exactly to do that.
You want to make money from home, and you want to create the right business for you. A business that’s both profitable and fulfilling.
There are three steps to starting the right business and making your first 10K. They are:
- Find an idea – one that plays to your unique strengths (don’t waste time copying other people)
- Test your idea – see what works and what doesn’t (and do this as quickly as possible)
- Tweak your idea – look at your results and improve on your idea (and keep improving it forever)
Once you commit to an idea, you must quickly test it. Then keep tweaking and improving your idea until you achieve your goal.
Because here’s the thing…
… finding the right home business is an iterative process.
Once you have an idea of what you want to do. A path that lights you up but also scares you. You need to act.
Take the first step. Then the next. And the next.
Take action, observe your results, and try again. Rinse and repeat. This is how you will discover your ideal home business and start making money from home.
